About this guide
China is one of the most exciting places we have ever travelled to, and also one of the trickiest to plan. Google Maps doesn't work properly, most small shops want Alipay or WeChat Pay, English is not widely spoken, and finding vegetarian food is a task.
We are Ritesh and Rinnku from The Two Who Travel. We spent September 2026 travelling across China, and we wrote down everything we wished we had known before we left. This guide is that. It's honest, practical and written the way we would explain it to a friend.
You get the routes, the apps, the practical tips, the mistakes to avoid and the hotels we would book again, so you can plan your own trip with far fewer surprises.
This guide is for everyone, wherever you are travelling from. Only the visa section is written for Indian passport holders.
WHAT'S INSIDE
- 01Plan your trip
the months to avoid and a clear comparison of all six itineraries, with add-ons like Universal Studios and Disneyland.
- 02Before you fly
Alipay, a local SIM plus roaming, VPN, Amap for maps, money (including the money-exchange scam to avoid), booking trains, hotels and attractions, and what to pack.
- 039 city chapters
Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai, Zhangjiajie, Chongqing, Chengdu, Yangshuo and Guilin, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Each has an at-a-glance box, the things not to miss, "very important" warnings, insider tips and vegetarian tips.
- 04Where to stay in every city
our suggested area to stay, and a full list of 4-star and 5-star hotels, with the ones we stayed at marked.
- 056 day-by-day itineraries
every one on its own page, from a 7-night shopping trip to our full 21-night route.
- 06On the ground
trains, taxis, attractions, guided tours, passport rules, toilets and food, and the Indian restaurants we liked in five cities.
- 07Shopping guide
where to shop in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen, including the wholesale markets and Huaqiangbei.
- 08Final checklist
a tick-off list for before you apply, before you fly and when you land.
- 09Visa section for Indian passport holders
our own experience, the two-step process, the documents to carry, the fees we paid and a cover letter template.
WHAT YOU WILL GET
- A route you can copy as it is, or mix and match from, with the number of nights in each city.
- Hotels sorted by area, so you stay where it is easy to get around.
- The right apps set up before you land in China.
- Fewer expensive mistakes, like wrong money changers, missed time slots and the wrong train class.
- A shopping plan, so you know which market is for what.
- Peace of mind from advice that comes from two people who did this trip recently.
- If you hold an Indian passport, a visa plan you can follow.
Why buy this guide
- First-hand, not copied. It's built on our own trip, and where a city is researched and not visited by us, the guide says so.
- Practical and honest. We tell you what worked, what did not, and what we would do differently.
- Easy to read. Short sections, checklists and day-by-day plans, not a wall of text.
- Vegetarian-friendly. Tips, restaurant picks and a packing list for ready-to-eat food.
- Saves you hours. It replaces dozens of tabs, blogs and group chats.
WHO THIS GUIDE IS FOR

- Couples, families and friends planning 1 to 3 weeks
- Vegetarian travellers who want to plan their food

Visa rules, fees, prices, opening times and apps change often. This guide is based on our September 2026 trip and our research up to October 2026. Please re-check every requirement before you book.
