We all are feeling claustrophobic within the boundaries of our houses since the lockdown has started. With the rise of fear of travelling to international destinations, people are now inclined to explore local destinations more than ever. Nestled in the serenity of Aravalli mountains & Lake Pichola, the magnificent charm of Udaipur makes for a great getaway if you wish to plan to travel post lockdown. Here’s what you should keep in mind if you are already planning one!
Note: Safety measures, hygiene protocols, and health guidelines have to be maintained while travelling to any destination during this current scenario. We made sure to follow each and every step, and you must do the same!
Traditional Elegance
Udaipur is rich in architecture marvels, flamboyant culture, and mind-blowing history. You may visit its beautiful palaces and temples to witness the monumental grandeur. Four significant lakes in Udaipur are Fateh Sagar Lake, Lake Pichola, Swaroop Sagar Lake, and Doodh Talai Lake. Locals welcome their guests by greeting “Khamma Ghani” with folded hands as “Mehman Bhagwan Hai” for them. 🙂
Connectivity
Udaipur is one of the most accessible tourist destinations in India. You can reach Udaipur by train, flight (you’ll have to arrive at Maharana Pratap Airport), or by road. We had booked our accommodation at The Leela Palace where we reached by road from Mumbai in 13 hours. You could reach the palace by boat from the jetty, but there is another entry by road as well. But, we would recommend taking the road to have a unique experience.
Best Time To Drop By
From mid-November to early March is the peak season in Udaipur when prices are really high. If you can stand humidity and sucker for money-saving hacks, visit Udaipur in August or September to save some extra bucks.
Hub Of Celebrations
The feel of Udaipur is merely grand. Those who couldn’t have a destination wedding, Udaipur is a great place to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, and any sort of special events. We strongly suggest arranging for photography if you’re celebrating something in Udaipur. Trust us; you’ll cherish these photos and videos forever.

Heritage Treats
Due to COVID restrictions, we couldn’t visit many places; however, we would recommend visiting The Monsoon Palace for a majestic panoramic view, City Palace for traditional architecture, and Jag Mandir for private dining in a royal way! Jag Mandir is well lit and beautifully decorated only during the peak season. Don’t forget to visit Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar Lake and enjoy lip-smacking food and delightful sunsets.
Retail Therapy
Again due to COVID-19, we couldn’t explore many shopping hubs as well. Babu Bazaar and Bada Bazaar are the best places to shop authentic artefacts, Indian outfits, chunky silver jewellery, Bandhani and Lehriya dresses, traditional sarees. You can get some good quality Razaai (blankets and bedsheets) from there too. You’ll also find some fantastic pieces to experiment with your home decor scene! Shopping in Udaipur is incomplete if you don’t buy traditional sweets like Ghevar, Besan Ki Laddoos, and Kaju Patisa to feed your foodie soul and your near & dear ones.
Best Places To Stay
We would definitely suggest you picking a five-star property like The Leela Palace as they literally bombard their guests with choices in everything and makes you feel like real Maharajas & Maharanis! If you’re looking for magnificent lake views, then The Leela Palace is the best. The second good option for lake view hotel is Taj Lake Palace; Taj is in the middle of the Lake Pichola which is stunning however, the rooms are not very spacious. If Lake view room is not your priority, The Oberoi Udaivilas is also fantastic. Yet, it has only four lake-facing rooms. We both are very fascinated with the water body around us. Lake & ocean view makes us happy. So, for us, if staying at the Lake Pichola and not getting a lake view, was a complete no, even if the property has beautiful interiors.
If space, lake-view and great customer services are the deal-breakers for you, go for The Leela Palace, you won’t regret it!
#Tip: If you’re planning your stay at any of the palaces in Udaipur, do carry a lot of clothes with vibrant colours, ethnic wear, long flowy dresses for women, and semi-formal outfits.
